Annual 85VICS Yorke Island Spring Cleanup
Twelve members of the 85VICS completed their annual Yorke Island Cleanup from 23-26 May 2025. Following describes their activity on the island.
23 MAY 2025
- Landed at Yorke.
- Roll call and Island Safety Orientation.
- Gear hauled up.
- Quick inspection of Fort and Facilities.
- Flag Raised.
- Mouldering Toilet Lifted and Serviced.
- Cleaning of #1 and #2 Gun Bunkers and Crew Shelter.
- Plan and Safety Orientation for using hand tools.
- Main Trail clearing (Three blowdowns).
- Two General Public Visitors from Nanaimo landed on Yorke, later departing.
24 MAY 2025
- Continuation of Cleaning #1 and #2 Gun Bunkers.
- 4 CRPG Junior Rangers (Port Hardy) arrives on Yorke. 6 Adults and 17 youths.
- 4 CRPG Assists in cleaning Fort.
- Inspection of additional buildings (Searchlights, Powerhouse etc...).
- Concrete Replica Ordinance hauled to Fort.
- Clearing of trails and Master Gunner's Residence.
25 MAY 2025
- 4 CPRG Junior Rangers (Port Hardy) depart.
- Installation of Roof Supports (4x4 Treated Timbers) on Searchlight #1 & Searchlight #2.
- Clearing of Master Gunner's Residence.
- Two General Public Visitors from Vancouver landed on Yorke, later departing.
- Four General Public Visitors from Comox landed on Yorke, later departing.
26 MAY 2025
- Gear Packed up and hauled down.
- Flag Lowered.
- 85VICS departs.
Overall, the trip was very successful An attempt to install roll-on roofing for the Docent Shack was shelved as proper ladders and fall protection is required. Docent Shack is in excellent condition given damp installation of roofing siding boards.
One of the 85VICS is a Structural Engineer out of Campbell River and he expressed interest in rebuilding the stairs to the BOP.
Work is progressing on another 3D Print of the 6" Shell for use as a Mark II mould for concrete shells.
