Captain Frank Clayton Whitehead was awarded the Military Cross while serving with the 21st Battery, 4th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery in 1919. His citation reads,"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 2nd September, 1918, near Mount Dury, when detailed to go forward with the infantry in charge of a party to man and bring captured guns into action. He found three guns, and commenced firing over open sights at an enemy battery, silencing two guns. Shortly afterwards an enemy battery obtained a direct hit on one of his guns. His dash and initiative were a great help to the infantry."

Training
The Brigade was armed with the 18-pounder gun for the field batteries and the 60-pounder for the 5th Siege Battery. Gun drill and riding took on a more serious outlook following the first camps, and when it came time for the 1922 camp a far different Brigade arrived in Sarcee. Local winter training at the Horse Show Building had been interspersed with indoor baseball for the men and polo for the officers. The first honours to fall upon the Brigade were most impressive when at the 1922 camp the 31st Battery won the Governor General's and Earl of Stradbrook Cups for general efficiency, the Grant Challenge Cup for tactics, the Macdonald Challenge Trophy for gun laying and signalling and the Hurdman Challenge Cup plus a cash prize of $140.00 for the efficiency of personnel competition, a record unequalled in the history of the Artillery Association Competitions! …. At considerable expense the 60 pounders would be loaded on Canadian Pacific Rail flatcars and taken to camp.
