6 October 1952: King George VI dies in his sleep
His Majesty, King George VI, has died peacefully in his sleep at Sandringham House.The official announcement from Sandringham, given at 1045 GMT, said the King retired in his usual health, but passed away in his sleep and was found dead in bed at 0730 GMT by a servant.
He was 56, and was known to have been suffering from a worsening lung condition.
Princess Elizabeth, who is at the Royal hunting lodge in Kenya, immediately becomes Queen at the age of 25.
She has been informed of her father's death, and is preparing to return to London, but a thunderstorm has delayed the departure of her plane.
She is expected back tomorrow afternoon, when she will take the Royal Oath which will seal her accession to the throne.

"The Defence Council, the officers, non-commissioned officers and men of Your Majesty's Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Air Force desire to convey to Your Majesty the profound shock and heartfelt sorrow with which they have received the tidings of the death of the late King, their revered Commander-in-Chief, and wish at the same time to express their sentiments of devotion to Your Majesty's Throne and Person".
2. The following reply from Her Majesty has been received.
"Please convey my sincere thanks to all ranks and ratings of the Royal Canadian navy, the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force for their message of sympathy which I deeply value".

Len Norris
Len Norris was a longtime editorial cartoonist for the Canadian newspaper Vancouver Sun from 1950 to 1988 and often used the Beatty Street Drill Hall as a back drop for many of his military themed cartoons. This year there was a story that horses had been held on the Army payroll as a means to acquire sufficient funds for their upkeep and Canada's military funding is a constant target for comment. |

Noted Canadian Industrial Consultant and Writer Was Born in Toronto
Lewis Craven Ord, Canadian industrial consultant in England and noted broadcaster, lecturer and writer on economics, died in England June 22, according to word received here yesterday. he was 71.
Associated with the Canadian Pacific Railway for 20 years, he served as superintendent of the Angus Car Shops before going overseas with the 1st Canadian Siege Battery in the First World War.

Bombardier Bernard White
Barnard “Barney” White, 69, of 131 East Twenty-seventh Street, died in Shaughnessy Military Hospital Thursday.
Since 1918, he had been in charge of Center & Hanna Chapel here until his retirement a few months ago.
He was a member of 68th Battalion, enlisting in 1915 and going overseas two years later.
He leaves his wife, Sadie and two sons, Lieut. Don of the RCN in Halifax and Bernard A. in Vancouver.
Funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m., Masonic section, North Vancouver Cemetery. Rev. F.A. Ramsey, Rev. William Stott, and Rev. Frank G. Patterson officiating.
