The role of the UN troops was to ensure that areas designated as "UN Protected Areas" (UNPA) became and remained demilitarized and that all persons residing in these areas were protected from fear of armed attack. Bombardier Drew Bartlett deployed with 2 PPCLI in March 1992. Bombardier John Meszaros deployed in October . See more... |

20-22 Nov 1992 Exercise Target Round, Chilliwack, BC
RSO Captain Leon Jensen
More photos from the Amnon Lichtmann collection. I might have this in the wrong year but that's because everyone is wearing their raincoats and I can't see their ranks! It's definitely Chilliwack and it appears to be Captain Leon Jensen as the Range Conducting Officer (RCO) with Lieutenant Kent Wickens as an Assistant RCO and Captain Ron Mathews as the Range Safety Officer (RSO). The relay, from the right, appears to be Donato Calogero, Nick Watts, Layne Yoshimaru and John McClelland. See more...

Vancouver Coastal Defences revisited
The defence of the Vancouver Harbour was quite extensive with Forts located at Point Grey, Stanley Park and Narrows North. The requirement to illuminate targets should an attack take place at night necessitated the construction of searchlight emplacements throughout the area. The Point Atkinson emplacement is still in place below the lighthouse along with the concrete foundation for the generator. See more...

The 47th Annual Military Ball
The prestigious event was held at the Hotel Vancouver. Invites were mailed, Tickets purchased.
Debutantes were enlisted and given a wonderful introduction to the intricacies of the formal event.
There was a Debutantes’ Dinner and Dance at the Bessborough Armoury.
The Dads and Debs event at The Drill Hall on Beatty Street.
The menu was prepared.
Still no photos of the actual event……Although we do have some social pages from the local newspapers.

Captain David Hubert Bain Mapleton CD 1920-1992
I saw three ships come sailing April 19th marks the ten-year anniversary of the passing of David H. Mapleton, dearly loved husband to Bettie, father of David Jr. and Marjorie, and uncle of Anne and Jill. He was a proud Canadian and served with the 15th Field Regiment to ensure, as much as possible, that there would be no more war. He raised his son and daughter in an environment powered by love, guided by compassion, and protected by the bonds of family, yet encouraged them to grow and experience life in their own ways.
