9 Pounder of 6 cwt Mark II
In 2017, the 15th Field Artillery Regiment Museum & Archives came across two interesting letters in some unaccessioned material. The letters dealt with a pair of 13 pounders previously owned by the Regiment, one of which was given to the Queen's Own Rifles Museum in Calgary, AB and the other to the RCA Museum in Shilo, MB in 1963. A subsequent letter from the RCA Museum corrected the description of the gun that they had received to that of a "9 Pounder of 6 cwt Mark II for Land Service".

Our interest was piqued as the guns had shown on several photographs without any description and an article from the Times-Colonist newspaper dated 20 June 1956. The 43rd Medium Anti-Aircraft lends their 9 pounder to the 5th West Coast Harbour Defence Battery for use in their sunset ceremony over the summer. This gun appears to have been received from the 102nd Coast Regiment RCA when the two units were combined.
We were fortunate in that the new Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel, Don Foster was signed up for an introductory course at the Home Station, CFB Shilo shortly after our discovery. In discussion with the RCA Museum it was agreed that they would loan us the gun for a 5 year period in order for us to have a more complete set of guns from Canada's history.
Our next project is the uncrating and re-assembly of the gun. Are you doing anything on Wednesday 2 May at 1000 hrs? C'mon down to the Armoury and we'll scope out the job ahead. There's always the great $20.00 lunch in the Officers' Mess afterwards! RSVP [email protected]
My apologies but I just couldn't resist assembling the whole gun on Wednesday! Special thanks to the crew at the RCA Museum in Shilo, MB - that was an awesome job of packing the gun, there was no apparent freight damage at all. Of course our own museum society president MGen (ret) Stu McDonald, curator Peter Moogk and assistant museum curator John Redmond were on hand to offer words of wisdom while leaving the heavy lifting to Bombardier (ret) Eric Halstead, Gunner Mark Magtibay and Gunner Zeshan Syed. Thanks for the help!

Now for the research work. What is the history of barrel R-C-E, No. 460 II 1876? Are there gun history books archived somewhere? Gun drill manuals? Equipment tables? Are you interested in joining me in the research? Any leads or information that you find would be greatly appreciated! [email protected]
