Battlefield Tour 2019
The possibility exists for a small group adventure in Northern Russia in 2019. The intent of the adventure is to tour the route of 68 Battery in 1918/1919 during their service with the Northern Russia Expeditionary Force. Captain Mowat was killed during this time as well as Gunner David Fraser and Gunner Frank Russell.
The portion of the tour at Arkhangelsk requires some greater detail but it does offer the following key points:
- the route of 68 Battery, Canadian Field Artillery along the Arkhangelsk - Vologda railway (23 hour train ride);
- two nights in Archangel visiting the graveyard and local museum;
Unfortunately, at this point in time, that is all the detail that I have been able to place into this portion of the trip. I am currently investigating a stop over at Shenkursk but the details are difficult to find and a local guide has yet to appear.
While we're in the neighbourhood I thought it would be of interest to stop at the following ;
- St Petersburg - Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signals
- St Petersburg - Mikhailovskaya Artillery Military Academy
- Moscow - May Day Parade
- Yekaterinburg Artillery Institute - This may be too great of distance to reach.
- Larkhill, Woolwich - unfortunately the Royal Artillery Museum is closed and we need a contact to make arrangements.
The tour is envisioned to consist of current serving members, former serving members and friends of the Regiment. It will probably be a small team of from 4 to 8 but if interest is greater we can certainly add more teams.
