Gunner Allan Gow Carruthers – 21 March 1953
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Simmons & McBride Chapel for Allan Gow Carruthers, 60, of 3658 West Thirty-sixth. He died Saturday.
A resident of Vancouver for the past 46 years, Mr. Carruthers had been connected with the wholesale jewellery business for 42 years. He was president of the firm of A.G. Carruthers Limited.
BORN IN ONTARIO
Mr. Carruthers was born in Cayuga, Ont. During World War One, he served with the “Shiny Third” section of the Fifth Division Ammunition Column, RCA.
President of the B.C. Branch of the Canadian Jewellers’ Association. Mr. Carruthers was also a member of Southern Cross Lodge No. 44, A.F.& A.M., Vancouver Royal Arch Chapter No. 2, Columbia Preceptory No. 34, Gizeh Temple Shrine and Vancouver Lodge of Perfection, Scottish Rite. He was a pioneer member of Rotary International and a member of Marine Drive Golf Club for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; one son, Terry; a daughter, Mrs. John E. Thompson; one granddaughter, Elizabeth; all of Vancouver. Also surviving are two brothers, Jack, at Duncan, V.I., and Wharton at Telkwa, B.C.; his step father, Rev. W.H. Redman, Burton, Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Ernest Chave, Mount Lehman, B.C.; and Mrs. Ron Hayes of Vancouver.

Pallbearers will be G.D. Hunt, Dick Parry, Douglas Lawler, J.L. Marshall, H. Hap Hollingum and John Mackay. Honorary pallbearers are W.H. McClean, J.A. Waters, C.P. Brown, Fraser Van Campe, David McKinnell and Ed Foster.
Rev. A.H. Cummings will officiate and burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery, Burnaby.
Because of Mr. Carruthers’ death, annual general meeting of the Canadian Jewellers’ Association, B.C. section, scheduled for tonight, has been canceled.

Melvin, DD, will conduct the funeral service in the Mount Pleasant Chapel, Kingsway at 11th, on Monday, July 6, at 2:15 p.m. Internment, Masonic Cemetery, at Burnaby, B.C.

Lieutenant Richard Secord Phillips
A former member of 43rd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RCA and 15th Field Regiment RCA was killed in Petawawa, ON 19 February 1953, while serving with the 81st Field Regiment RCA. His death was caused by a premature 25 pounder artillery round. He leaves behind a wife, Anne Elizabeth Phillips and is interred at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, BC. |
Bombardier George Strang
Post Office Veteran Laid At Rest
Funeral services will be held Tuesday for George Strang who had worked for the Vancouver Post Office since he came here in 1913. He was 61.
Mr. Strang was born in Scotland. He came straight to B.C. when he decided to make Canada his home.
He retired from his position with the post office only three months ago.
During World War One he served four years overseas with an artillery regiment.
Apart from his wife, Mr. Strang is survived by a daughter Katherine; two sons, George and Gordon of Penticton; three brothers, Archibald of Vancouver, William of Spokane and James; five sisters, Mrs. Barbara Smeaton, Mrs. E.S. Lincoln, Miss. Mary Strang, and Mrs. Bud Moulton, all of Vancouver, and Mrs. Thomas Mercer of San Francisco, and five grandchildren.
Service is at 3 p.m. from Harron Bros. Ltd. Rev William Gatbrett officiating. Burial will be at the Field of Honor at Mountain View Cemetery.
