Cadet William Orson Banfield
A memorial service will be held Wednesday for W. Orson Banfield, who was honored as a freeman of the city in 1977 for long and distinguished service to Vancouver.
Mr. Banfield, 85, of 5575 Angus, died Saturday in Vancouver General Hospital after a short illness. He had served as a trustee of the hospital from 1942 to 1971, including four years as chairman.
His father, John Joseph Banfield, also served on the hospital board for several years and was also its chairman.
Banfield pavilion, the chronic-care facility at VGH, is named in honor of the Banfield family.
A city alderman in 1962-63 and 1965-66, Mr. Banfield served with several civic organizations, including the civic theatre board, the rental grievance accommodation board, the board of variance and the civic auditorium board.
Born and educated in Vancouver, he served overseas with the Canadian army during the First World War.
After completing his education he went to work in his father’s insurance and real estate business and stayed there until he retired in 1960.
Mr. Banfield is survived by his wife Beatrice and son and daughter-in-law, John and Cheryl Banfield, all of Vancouver, and by his daughter and son-in-law, Jane Banfield Haynes and Robert Haynes of Toronto, and grandchildren Lindsay, Carla, Suzanne and Andrea Banfield, of Vancouver.
The memorial service will be held aw 1:30 p.m. in Shaughnessy Heights United Church, 1550 West 33rd.
Cadet Banfield enlisted with 68th Overseas Depot Battery 3 October 1916 and served overseas with the 2nd and 4th Canadian Divisional Ammunition Columns. He was promoted Sergeant and appointed Cadet as he embarked on his commissioning as an Artillery officer.

Gunner Percival Willard Gilson
In Victoria, B.C. on October 14, 1983, Percival Willard Gilson aged 86 years of 2562 Cavendish Ave., born in St. Paul, Minnesota. He leaves his daughter, Mrs. Velma Galbraith of Porter’s Lake, Nova Scotia; three grandchildren, Cynthia, Patricia and Carolyn; three great-grandsons, Adam, Daniel and Aaron and one sister, Mrs. Fredeline Huckin, Victoria, B.C. Predeceased by his wife Doris in 1980 and his son, Flt. Officer Vernon Beverly of the R.C.A.F. in 1944. Funeral serice in St. John’s Anglican Church, Quadra at Mason, on Tuesday, October 18 at 2:00p.m. with the Ven. Arch. R.D. MacRae officiating. Interment at Royal Oak Burial Park. Gunner Gilson served in World War I with the 62nd Battery, 15th Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery before being transferred to the 14th Brigade.

He served in the Canadian Field Artillery in the First World War; and also served in the Second World War. A family service was held in Penticton.
