Open Doors Richmond - 3/4 Jun 2017
One event leads to another event! During our Artillery Day event we ran across Harold Steves while visiting the location of "Fort Steveston." Harold had been the mascot for 58 Battery when he was 5 years old and they went as far as getting a tailor made battle dress uniform for him.
Harold mentioned the fact that it had been, "a long time since he'd seen Gunners by his house" and invited us out for the Open Doors event.
Of course we couldn't say no and brought out the 25 pounder and limber to set up on his front yard. Being somewhat short on time behind the wheel of the Field Artillery Tractor (FAT), we were grateful for the offer of a tow by Harry Moon, the President of Western Command, Military Vehicle Collectors Club of Canada. With Harry leading in his CMP, Bob Mugford quickly got into the groove of driving our own FAT as the tail vehicle. With Harry, Bob, Leon Jensen and Bernie Rowe we managed to answer many of the questions from the constant crowd of onlookers. Sunday brought out some more volunteers from the Association including Doug Loney and Bill Ingram to help Bob, Leon and Bernie. All went well including Bob towing the 25 pounder and limber back to Bessborough. Only damage was the two panes of glass that popped out when the door was closed at the gas station!
Thanks for the invite Harold! We had a great time and look forward to seeing you at the Armoury for lunch one Wednesday.
Special thanks to Ian Newby from International Movie Services for the loaner Khaki Drill for Bob and Leon. Gave us a great insight into outfitting the complete detachment.
Now for the next event that was suggested....something about an art show?
