Yorke Island 2009
Ross Keller from the 85Vics provides a tour of Yorke island in June of 2009 to a group consisting of his son Tre, some friends, and the Director of Public Programs at the Campbell River Museum, Ken Blackburn.
An astute observer can see there are still trees in the Number Two gun pit and extensive cleaning has yet to be done. The lifts for the 6 inch magazines are still open and have not had the wire covers built over them.
An interesting photo of the Kelsey Bay docks from the Battery Observation Post. It's been quite a few years since the trees were short enough to see them from on top of the tower.
A stop at the beached boat and a climb around was always interesting as long as tides allowed. The official story is that this was an accident due to a miscalibrated autopilot. The boat parked itself there requiring the men to stay while the catch was unloaded.
Remnants of the foam mattresses they used while there and then left behind can be found in and around the bushes of the Number Three Searchlight. The exact date of the wreck is unknown but it may have been in the mid 90's. There were a couple of names suggested but we are as unable to find anyone who was on the crew to tell the full story.
