Yorke Island 21-26 August 2023
A great effort by the Yorke Island volunteers to move the Master Gunner Residence project forward. A 3 person team, Jacob, Bradyn and Leon were on the island for 4 days shovelling dirt out the basement windows. Estimates are that 90% has been removed!
We also managed to land the ILTIS on the island with the assistance of the Marine Link folks. It was a tremendous asset as we no lnger had the lengthy trek up and down the hill. Jacob also brought his pipes to practice. Whatever better place for bagpipes than a remote island.
The one day tour arrived on Saturday with Matt and Russ taking a flight from Vancouver Airport to Campbell River, a rental car to Sayward and then a BC Parks boat to the island. Quite the journey and it was rather lengthened when their return flight was canceled and they had to spend the night in Campbell River.
Ross, Brendan and Rich were also part of the one day tour and brought along Rich's sister and her partner. Ross conducted a tour while Rich and Brendan focused on some Master Gunner Residence dimensions.
All in all a great week. QR codes have now been placed in many of the buildings and we found the Master Gunner Residence Sump. Bonus points tht it still drained after all these years buried under rubble. We also uncovered the post holes in the basement floor, the fireplace base, furnace base and determined how the 2 x 10 floor supports were constructed. Now we just need to raise some funds to move the construction along. If you're interested, you can donate here rcaa.member365.com/sharingnetwork/fundraisingCampaign/makeDonation/11
