Gun Emplacement #1
The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery numbers the guns in a Battery in succession from the right. Both of the large gun emplacements held 6 inch Breech Loading Mark VII Guns on a Mark II(L) Garrison Mounting. These guns were were deemed obsolete by the late thirties but there was little prospect of receiving upgrades in the near future so they were quickly moved out from Halifax and from Quebec City where they had been installed since the World War I. These guns had been mounted at the Stanley Park Fort at the begining of the war and subsequently moved to Yorke Island in June 1942.
The 6" guns and overhead protection replaced the two 4.7-Inch Quick Firing Mark IV "B" Guns on Mark III Garrison Carriages that had originally been installed in 1939. Their history goes back even further than that, as they were originally mounted at Halifax, Nova Scotia and were given to Canada on the handover of the Halifax Fortress in 1905.
Maximum range 6" - 12,000 yards
Maximum range 4.7" - 11,800 yards (effective range with automatic sights - 6,000 yards)
Shell weight - 100 lbs
Rate of fire 4.7" - 10 rds per minute by day, 8 rds per minute by night
