Yorke Island 15-18 July 2021
Stu McDonald, Leon Jensen, Eric Halstead and Ross Keller had an exceptional weekend on Yorke Island.. This was the first trip for Stu and Eric and they received the full tour of the emplacements, battery observation post, powerhouse, Sunderland Post and the searchlight emplacements.
The schedule consisted of:
Wed 14 Jul - drive to Sayward stay overnight Sayward Valley Resort;
Thu 15 Jul - transport to Yorke, island hike, overnight war shelter;
Fri - 16 Jul - continued island exploration, overnight war shelter;
Sat- 17 Jul - sweeping activities, photo activities, overnight war shelter;
Sun - 18 Jul - Return home.
Main focus of trip was:
A- Assessment of rock facade with focused photographs of damage,
B - Creation of photographs depicting today's view of historic Yorke Island photos (a collection of then and now pictures),
C- Production of Yorke Island video, and
D-Confirmation photos of overhead cover columns.
Our connection with the island started as we stepped on the Kelsey Bay wharf as three Coast Guard members came over and introduced themselves. One is a current serving gunner of 15th Field Artillery Regiment! A dinner invite followed!
The connection continued as a fellow stepped forward and identified himself as the son of a Yorke Island Gunner and finished with a conversation with the great volunteers of Sayward Futures Society. They are excited to hear that the 192 CEF is scheduled for next month!
Highlighted celebration on the trip was Ross Keller's 300th day on the island! Well done, Ross! Thanks for all that you've done to keep the memories alive of those that have served on Yorke. The Vancouver Artillery Association is honoured to work with you.
More photos and videos will follow shortly....

The snails on Yorke appear to be larger than those found in other areas of southern BC. Check out these photos.
