Colonel Cyril Gainsborough Beeston Retires
As reported in the Vancouver Province 23 November 1938, Colonel Beeston had a very adventurous career. It is with great sadness that we pass on the news of the passing of Captain (ret’d) Eric Clifford Tyldesley-Gore CD last night. Eric joined the 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA in 1961 and rose through the ranks to become Regimental Sergeant Major in 1976. After a tour as the District Sergeant Major, he returned to 15th Field Regiment for a second tour as Regimental Sergeant Major in 1981. His retirement to the Vernon area allowed him to support the Army Cadet movement and he was commissioned as a Captain in the Cadet Instructor Cadre.
There will not be a funeral but there will be a Celebration of Life around October. Good Shooting. Stand Easy. While updating the nominal roll, I came across the curious circumstances of Driver William Sadler's broken tibia and the subsequent reporting of the injury.
Driver Sadler was a member of 38th Battery, 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery on 20 May 1917 when he was evacuated to hospital with a broken leg. The injury subsequently had him invalided to England for recovery. A Court of Inquiry was convened on 29 June 1917 during which witnessed described the break as having happened during an organized football match between the 38th and 39th Battery on 20 May. Driver Sadler appeared to have stepped into a shell hole and broken his leg. The attending Doctor wrote on the 28th May that the injury had been caused by a mule that had fallen on Driver Sadler's leg while he was delivering rations to the trenches. I wonder which is the true story? The Honorable William Culham Woodward was re-appointed Honorary Colonel of 15th (Vancouver) Coast Regiment RCA.
