Funeral Held for Horace Hollingum
Funeral has been held for Horace (Hap) Holingum, 70, veteran of two world wars and a printer and businessman. He recently retired as president of The Letter Shop, a firm he headed for 47 years. Born in England and educated in Canada, Mr. Hollingum went overseas with the Canadian Artillery in the First World War. He won his wings while training in Egypt but never had an opportunity to fly in the Royal Flying Corps. He joined the RCAF in the Second World War and retired with the rank of wing commander. Mr Hollingum was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, several other veterans’ organizations and the Terminal City Club. FAMILY: a son, Victor; a daughter, Mrs. H.A. Beck, and five grandchildren. The Province 21 February 1969 Wing Commander Hollingum enlisted in the 68th Overseas Depot Battery on 21 February 1916 and served with the 5th Canadian Divisional Ammunition Column, reaching the rank of Sergeant, before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps as a Cadet.
Newspaper clippings from 1923 highlight many of the activities at the unit as they train at the Horse Show Building in preparation for Sarcee Summer Camp where they are hoping to retain their standing as the top Battery in Canada. The 15th Brigade Dance is featured in the Society Page! Mrs Coghlan was the Commanding Officer's wife and Mrs. Stuart was the wife of the Adjutant. Captain and Mrs Duff Stuart were prominently featured in the news on their wedding day in 1921.
Life Saving Award
One of the members of the Brigade, Sergeant Harry Mangles, assists in the rescue of two youngsters that had fallen through the ice at Lost Lagoon. Check out the the other news articles here. Bombardier Thure Halvarson, MM enrolled with the 68th Overseas Depot Battery, Canadian Field Artillery on 21 February 1916 and served with 3rd Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery in France. he was awarded the Military Medal for "Bravery in the Field" on 21 September 1918. On 27 September 1918, he was wounded which resulted in the amputation of his right leg and subsequent return to Canada.
