We've tracked down the details for the awarding of the Military Medal to Bombardier Mann! For exceptional gallantry and devotion to duty on October 22nd, 1916, when an explosion occurred in a gun pit, while the battery was firing setting fire to the ammunition and the gun pit. This N.C.O. entered the gun pit in spite of the intense heat and withdrew the dial sight and dial sight carrier from the gun carriage. In doing so, he was very severely burned, necessitating his evacuation. He received 2nd degree burns to his head, face and both hands. Another $1,000.00 worth of donations will put us in the position to bring his medals to our Museum for safekeeping. Will you donate? Email me at president.vcrgunners@gmail.com Another member awarded the Military Medal and that originally enlisted in the 68th Overseas Depot Battery, Canadian Field Artillery has been found. Sergeant Fred Hayes Knowles, MM was a member of the 1st Division Ammunition Column at the time although we are unaware of the details of the award. His medals are available for purchase but we are lacking sufficient funds. Would you care to donate?
Captain Richard Thomas Perry - Vimy Ridge
Captain Perry, a future Commanding Officer and architect of Bessborough Armoury, submitted a proposal in 1921 for the Vimy Ridge National Memorial. His submission was one of the 17 selected to submit a model for judging, but he was, unfortunately, not the final chosen design. I believe the attached sketch resembles the model described in the newspaper but I could not find the corresponding model displayed on the table. Where is that model today? |
